The SOUL STAGE is a classic festival performance area where bands and DJs will deliver crisp and interesting sets loosely presented along genre lines.
Friday has been dubbed REGGAE DAY – whether you dig ska, two tone, roots and culture or dub, we have something for you. As well as a world famous but as yet secret Jamaican headliner we have an amazing bill that includes sets from Don Letts, Gaz Mayall’s Rockin’ Blues and rock steady rockers Pama International. Add the Trojan Sound System, UK 2Tone chart regulars the Beat and some exclusive ‘King Tubby dub-plate’ performances from old school Kingstonites U Brown and Jah Thomas and the day is almost complete. Just in case that’s not enough, we also offer vintage ska from original mod DJ Dr Bob Jones, roots from The Tighten Up Crew and curator Eddie Piller will reprise his heavy dub set from Carnival and Glastonbury in the 90’s. Throw in some poetry from Tim Wells and the day is set for a Caribbean feast.
Saturday is down as FUNK DAY and whilst there are is still a headliner to put in place we have already booked an amazing special guest: Salsoul legend Joe Bataan, who started his career with mod/funk boogaloo but worked his way through soul, jazz-funk and eventually disco makes a rare UK appearance. More than that though we present a live broadcast of the BBC 6 ‘Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show’, the festival debut from The Third Degree (who’s rework of Duffy’s Mercy was the radio hit of last year), as well as a unique 60th birthday party! Chess Records, the first real rock and roll and soul label celebrate their 60th year and we are proud to host industry legend Marshall Chess spinning some favourite tunes from his family’s label. Also on the decks we have the presenter of Kiss FM’s Funk Show, Ali B, The Hipshaker crew and 100 Club legend, Dave Edwards.
Sunday could only be SOUL DAY, or SUNDAY SOUL as we choose to call it. Here we have turned to Curtis Mayfield protégé and legendary producer/performer Leroy Hutson for one of his extremely rare UK performances – well backed up with an original Flamingo club set from Dexy’s hero Geno Washington and his Ram Jam Band. On the decks Soul Stage curator Eddie Piller mixes northern and rhythm and blues whilst former Weller and Galliano producer Chris Bangs will be playing 70s soul alongside two UK festival debutants, Henry Storch from Unique Records and Dan De, the man behind Europe’s largest soul weekender, Baltic Soul.
The SOUL CASINO NIGHTCLUB is like something you will never see at a festival, ever. A replica of a mid 1970’s Mecca Ballroom with a sprung wooden dance floor, the SOUL CASINO evokes memories of ALL of the best soul clubs there ever were such as The Wigan Casino. It boasts possibly the best collection of soul DJ’s ever assembled at a festival. Jazz-Funk – no problem, we’ve got the godfather Chris Hill, Norman Jay MBE, northern innovator Ian Dewhirst and Hacienda resident Greg Wilson. Deep Funk? We’ve got Keb Darge, Snowboy Ali B and Lloyd Attrill. Northern Soul? 6T’s legend Ady Croasdell, Val Palmer and the Hipshaker crew. 6Ts R and B?? There’s 100 Club resident Dave Edwards, Paul Hallam and Richard Searle. 70s Soul? Festival organizer Wayne Hemingway is joined by Johnny Valatone, Lloyd Attrill and Bangsy.
Mod, soulboy, suedehead, skinhead, casual, rude boy, roots rocker, northern soulboy, jazz funker, jazz dancer, trendy, smoothie, or just music fan, we have something for you. Honest!
In short, I bet you’ll never leave the tents!
